LIFECYCLE PROJECT
Project introduction
The product I chose was paper for this project. I am going to investigate how paper is made and recycled.
Timeline
Raise and Extract
Papers lifecycle begins with cutting down trees. The main material in making paper is tree fibers. They usually use the inner layer of the tree to get the tree fibers. Paper can also be made with cotton, bamboo and much more.
Process
All the wood chips must be collected before they can start manufacturing. Wood chips isn't the only material used to make paper. They use natural glue to stick all the wood chips together. After that you can start making paper.
Manufacture
First in manufacturing they make the wood chips into pulp. Then they put the pulp on screens to drain the water. After that they put it in a roller that get any extra water out. Finally they cut the paper and then package it and send it out to stores and other companies.
Use
Paper is used for many different purposes. Make is use in schools almost everyday in every classroom. Paper is used to make cards and crafts. Paper is use to make brown paper bags use to carry you lunch to school. Paper is used for a lot of stuff and it has made things a lot easier for most people.
Dispose
Paper is one of the main things recycled and is the most recycled material in the U.S. After paper is recycled it can be use for many things such as making Christmas trees, pencil holders, and even paper as shown below. Paper can be use to make almost anything so why throw it away when we can reuse it to make thing? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Conclusion questions
A) Lifecycle is the start and the end of something, as show under Timeline. It starts out with adding a bunch of materials together to get one material. For example paper is made with many materials but the main one is wood chips. After it is use it is recycled and the reused for other purposes.
B) It is important for companies who make products to research and determine a product's potential lifecycle because they try to make products that are recyclable to help the environment. Also they work want to now how it is made and if it would be useful to people.
C) The thing I would change about paper is to make it so it was make from a different plant that wasn't as important as trees. If I did this we would have more trees, and more trees means more oxygen which humans need to live.
D) Paper might evolve in the future but it might not even exist in the future because of technology. Every year people invent new technology and that technology could replace paper. We have things that are like paper but in technology such as computers and tablet. These things can be used instead of paper but we still need to improve it so that it can replace paper.
E) Trade-off is a balance achieved between two desirable but incompatible features. An example of a trade of is taking away tree to make paper.
F) Yes I think that trade-offs were made during the design phase of paper because most likely they had a lot of ideas on how to make paper with different materials.
G) I think it is to recycle because if we don't recycle humans won't exist anymore in a couple decades. For example if we don't recycle plastic the world will become polluted. If we don't recycle paper then we will keep on cutting down trees and we will run out of oxygen and animals won't have any where too live so they will be on streets and in cities. Etc.
H) Product designers play a role in recycling because we cant recycle every material and if they make it with one of those materials then we can recycle it but if they do make it will recyclable material then we can recycle it. For example we can recycle cans, paper, tires, and much more but we can't recycle dippers, plastic bags and much more. Diapers don't decompose for around 550 years and plastic bags don't decompose for a long time, it could take 20 years or it could take 1000 years.
I) The environment depends on society to recycle. If the society didn't recycle the environment would be destroy. More people recycle but that's not good enough, we need everyone to recycle to keep the environment safe. When I go to the boardwalk I see no recycling bins and I see thousands of plastic bottle in the trash where they shouldn't belong. So society needs to step up and recycle.
J) I can help by tell my family members, classmates, and friends to recycle. If I get them to start recycling then they will tell their family members, classmates, and friends to recycle too. If I did this hopefully it will start a trend and then eventually also most everyone will recycle. But I cant do this by myself I need everyone that knows about recycling to spend the word and make an effort to recycle and save the environment.
